Identifying Infections for a Healthy Pregnancy

The news of pregnancy brings a bundle of joy in a woman’s life. However, during pregnancy, the lady can face some changes in her body which might not be pleasant for her. Most of these changes occur due to the change in hormone levels, which is unavoidable during pregnancy. One of the major problems for a pregnant lady is the infection. Some of the common infections faced during this phase are:

  • Vaginal infections
  • Uterine infections
  • Other infections such as HIV, herpes, hepatitis etc.

Among vaginal infections, yeast infection is one of the most common issues and there are many pregnancy infection medicine, but they are easily curable. However, uterine infections might bring some serious problems.

Some of the most common vaginal infections for pregnant ladies are as follows:

  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Group B Streptococcus (GBS)

A fungus called Candida is responsible for vaginal yeast infection. The usual symptoms of this type of infection are:

  • Thick vaginal discharge
  • An odd type of odor like beer coming from the vagina
  • Burning sensation around the vagina
  • Itching in and around the vagina
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

If any of the above symptoms are experienced, it is recommended to consult a doctor to get effective medicines for infection in pregnancy. However, the yeast infection can be avoided by maintaining hygiene and they do not have any serious effect.

The symptoms of bacterial vaginosis(BV) are:

  • Burning sensation and itching in and around the vagina
  • Fish like odor coming from the vagina
  • Gray-colored vaginal discharge

BV can cause premature birth, lower baby weight etc. Hence is any of these symptoms experienced by a pregnant lady, she should get immediate treatment which is easily available.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is One kind of bacteria. The problem with GBS is there are no clear symptoms for this. Also, in a few cases, GBS can be transferred to the baby from the mother during pregnancy. Hence going through a test to detect GBS is necessary during pregnancy. IV antibiotics can significantly decrease the chances for the baby to get affected by GBS.

Uterine infections are not easy to deal with and they bring severe complication for the pregnant ladies. The effects of uterine infections are:

  • It can harm the baby while developing.
  • The baby can have some abnormalities by birth.
  • Premature delivery can happen due to this.
  • Sometimes the lady can face life-threatening complexities like organ failure.
  • During labor, the mother can experience a high fever.

Sometimes, if vaginal infections are untreated, the bacteria can go to the uterus and cause uterine infection. This type of infection is mainly treated by antibiotics. However, if the situation becomes more complicated, the doctor might choose to perform a cesarean delivery to reduce life risk.

During pregnancy, the lady might experience some other serious infections such as HIV, flu, Hepatitis E, herpes, Listeria, measles etc. Doctors assume that risks involving these infections increase during pregnancy due to the hormonal change. Some medications for these infections might have some side-effects. So it is wise to consult a doctor for a healthy pregnancy.
